RSS renders many services to Jordanian society and the region at large in its specialist fields. It actively supports the Jordanian government by formulating opinions on issues involving research and technology policy, and is an adviser on new issues and controversial problems (such as the chronic water shortage, food and beverages, technical specifications, etc.). It represents Jordan on scientific and technical committees and boards and helps with the development of policies, strategies, and measures.
RSS also provides expert opinion on such issues as building codes. Its research activity also draws attention to health and social problems, for example contamination of mothers’ milk by pesticides. The training that RSS offers is also of substantive benefit to society, for example the ICDL certification programme is helping to create a new class of computer-literate teachers and public employees, which would reflect positively on the education system and government bureaucracy. RSS is active in building schools in remote areas with convenient specifications. Such projects are usually shunned by the private sector because of low profitability.
Through its membership on dozens of scientific, industrial, and academic boards, RSS exercises a variety of tasks in which its staff function as independent experts. In the scope of technical committee work, for example, standards and specifications are prepared and developed which are essential to the safety and well-being of society.
To carry out studies and applied scientific research related to industry and environment, and to the various areas of development.
In the environment sector, several technical studies are conducted on water and air monitoring and assessment in Jordan and one study was conducted for the Yemeni government to assess the actual ambient air quality in the area of the proposed Ma’rib power station. In the Building sector, RSS issued technical studies such as “Defining Means and Criteria for Improving Thermal Performance and Minimizing Energy Consumption in Buildings”, a continuous project since 2001. In addition, the national building codes, preliminary drafts for the updated codes of fire alarm systems, fire protection, building water supply and the preliminary draft of the new fire fighting systems code, have all been approved by the Codes Technical Committee. Furthermore, RSS took the responsibility to raise awareness of the dangers of earthquakes and is taking active steps to evaluate earthquake hazards and devise methods of mitigating their environmental impact.
In the Information Technology sector, several projects and studies have been conducted, such as Universal Networking Language Project (UNL), a continuous project that aims at eliminating language barriers, and multimedia for cultural heritage. In engineering industries sector (mechanical and electrical), RSS conducted several studies, such as development of spare parts manufacturing in industrial sectors, and developed a computerized electronic control system for a greenhouse in Jerash.
In the Chemical Industries sector, RSS conducted several studies with direct social impacts, the most important one being the extent of chlorinated pesticide residue in mothers’ milk. The final report of the second phase was issued during 2002.
In the socio-economic field, RSS conducted a number of studies and issued several booklets, like Directory of Support Services for Small and Medium Enterprises in Jordan, E-Commerce: The Jordanian Experience, Labour Market Requirements of Computer Science Qualifications, and The US-Jordan Free Trade Agreement and Qualified Industrial Zones as a Model for Industrial Development: the Case of Jordan and its Implication for the Middle East Region.
RSS provides a wide range of technical consultations and services in the areas of its specialization. In the Environment sector, RSS renders numerous technical consultations and services in the field of environment management related to water and air quality, environment impact assessment, and environmental auditing.
