RSS provided the following tests and technical consultations:
- About (95) technical consultations for local and foreign companies and institutions,
- (2) technical consultations in the field of radiation protection,
- (22000) laboratory tests of water samples belonging to governmental departmentsand private companies,
- (1700) qualitative analysis of radionuclide contamination in food-stuffs,
- (4920) tests on accumulative dosed received by (1230) workers in the fields of application of radiation and radioisotopes,
- (102) environmental radiation monitoring tests carried out in Wadi Araba and Russeifa mines regions,
- (35) tests on radionuclide contamination of air samples,
- (40) tests on radionuclide of soil and plants,
- (10) calibration for radiation measuring instruments,
RSS participated in the provision of technical consultations through the following committees:
- Nuclear Energy onsultative committee,
- Radiation Protection Commission,
- Ionizing Radiation Permanent Licensing Committee.
RSS also performed 7 tests in the field of radiotracing to determine the actual residence time in the ponds, in the rock filter and calorination basin, and to measure the output flow rate at As-Samra Waste Water Stabilization Ponds in the period April 24 - May 9, 1994.
c. Standards and Specifications
RSS participated in drafting environmental standards and specifications. RSS is presently participating in the technical committee formed to formulate national specifications on reuse of treated wastewater for various purposes.
d. Training
RSS offered different training programmes in environmental analysis this year to technicians from various institutions. A number of international experts in the field of environmental visited RSS, as wellas students, who aimed at increasing their environmental awareness. RSS presented papers to three local and international seminars in the field of environment, and participated in several local and international conferences.

- Completion of teachers' residential building at Mafraq district for the Ministry of ducation with a total area of 885 square metres using Building System np. (5),
- Restoration and renovation of the Salt Secondary School,
- Design and supervision of the Electronics Engineering Department of Princess Sumaya University College for Technology,
- Agreement with the Tlecommunications Corporation to provide consultative services to the buildings of the ational Programme of Communication project,

- (1500) metres of boreholes were drilled for site investigation of buildings,

RSS participated in various committees for the preparation and the revision of Jordanian standards and specifications for the following building materials:
- Kerbs stones,
- Ordinary and terrazzo cement tiles,
- Light-weight aggregate for insulating concrete,
- Light-weight aggregate for structural concrete,
- Concrete pipes,
- Polyethelene sheets for damp-proof courses for masonry,
- In addition, RSS participated as a member in the permanent technical committee for roofing and water proofing products.

RSS carried out this year, the following activities:
- Training course for engineers in the field of thermal insulation and dampness in buildings,
- Training course on thermal insulation code,
- Training course on laboratory tests for building material and construction products,
- Training course on building materials code,
- Training course on engineering regulations and project management,
- Training course on tests and classifications of soil for structure purposes,
- Training course on Site Investigation Code,
- Training course on Foundations and Retaining Walls Code,
- Training course in the field of computer applications in structural analysis and design,
- Training several engineering students from the Jordanian universities,
- Training course on Auto Cad and its applications.
RSS also participated in the following activities:

- Development of a 15 kw grid-connected wind turbine which is undergoing a long-term testing.
- Continuation of work on the development of a 500 W battery charging wind turbine which is undergoing a long-term testing.
- Development of a control system for a 5 KW electrical wind converter in cooperation with the Technical University of Berlin (TUB).
- International programme for the introduction of photovoltaic pumping (PVP) systems.

Technical Consultations and services
- Agreement with the Jordan Electricity Authority to provide technical support in the field of wind energy for the eldorado programme,
- Providing maintenance services to wind pumping systems in accordance with an agreement with the water Authority of Jordan,
- Designing and installing 4.7 kWp photovoltaic systems for electrification of six remote police stations,
- Repairing, maintaining, and developing the photovoltaic systems which RSS had installed to meet the energy needs of the Ministry of
Education housing units, the medical centres in Wadi aba, and Aqaba Railway Corporation,
- Designing a solar power electronics laboratory for serving photovoltaic projects in Libya,
- Designing and installing a solar space heating system utilizing air-collectors for a college in Amman,
- Designing, manufacturing and installing a solar water heating system utilizing evacuated ube collectors for a training centre for the physically
handicapped in Amman,
- agreement with local manufacturers to cooperate with them in producing solar water heaters according to RSS specifications, and to conduct the
relevant tests at RSS laboratories.

- Study on used lubricating oils in Jordan.
- Study on the manufacture of lubricating grease from waste mineral oils.
- Study on the development of road and pavement paints.
- Project for purification of phosphogypsum and its industrial uses in industry.
- Project for preparation of dicalcium phosphate using hydrochloric acid.
Technical Consulations and Services
RSS continued to provide technical consultations and quality control tests on samples sent
by industrial institutions to determine their composition and compatibility with locally
and internationally set standards and specifications. following are the technical services
and consultations provided by RSS during this year:
- (8000) tests on paints and raw materials used in the manufacture of paints,
- (4150) tests on used and unused mineral oils, fuels, ANTIFREEZE, AND LUBRICANTS,
- (6900) Tests on inorganic materials such as building materials, soil, phosphates,
fertilizers, salts, clinker, rocks, and alloys,
- (1600) tests on used oil, fertilizers, alloys, cement, and raw materials using X_Ray
flouescence (XRF) technique,
- (36000) tests on water, foodstuffs, oils, mineral oils, and fertilizers using Atomic
Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and inductively Coupled Plazma (ICP) techniques,
- (361) tests on foodstuffs, oils, chewing gums, insecticides, and vegetables to determine
antioxidizing agents, as well as the active ingredients in insecticides using Gas Chromatography,
- (773) tests on identify aflatoxine compounds in nuts, animal feed, and milk,
- (1564) tests on paper, textile, polypropylen, woven sacks, and sanitary paper, and paper board,
- (7000) tests on samples of foodstuffs, detergent, feedstuff, vegetable oils used in food and organic material.
RSS continued to carry out technical consultations and services. these included issuing certificates concerning
transportation regulations of dangerous goods according to International Air Transport Association (IATA). the
technical consultations also included mineral oils, lubricants, antifreeze, brke fluids, asphalt, fuels, paints,
detergents, and antiseptics. they also covered choice of appropriate paper in passports for the General Passport
Dpartment and appropriate paper sacks used in packing of flour and wheat in addition to the safety of using ammonium
nitrate in Jordan Phosphate Mines Company.
RSS also provided specialized technical consultations and services to industrial institutions to monitor production and control
quality in accordance with the following agreements signed this year:
- (6) agreements in the field of organic materials and detergents.
- (9) agreements in the field of paper and textile,
- (31) agreements in the field of paints,
- (5) agreements in the field of mineral oils,
- (5) agreements in the field of inorganic materials,
- (2) agreements in the field of insecticides,
- (1) agreement with the Royal Jordanian Air Force to determine wornout parts of planes engines.
Standards and Specifications
RSS conducted the following tests on different materials to determine their compatibility with the relevant standards and specifications:
- (1600) tests on samples of locally produced paints,
- (6000) tests on various imported foodstuff products,
- (4900) tests on medical gases,
- (1600) tests on paper and textile and sanitary paper,
- (3000) tests on lubricating oils, hydraulic oils, brake fluids, coolants, and gearbox oils,
- (1700) tests on various samples of fertilizers, salts, antiseptics, and inorganic materials.
RSS, also participated in the following committees to set or amend standards and specifications:
- (3) technical committees in the field of polishing paints and emulsion paints,
- (14) technical committees in the field of foodstuffs and detergents,
- (5) technical committees in the field of paper and textile,
- (4) technical committees in the field of inorganic materials,
- (4) technical committees in the field of insecticides.
RSS participated in several committees in the field of health, assessing insecticides used by Greater Amman Municipility, and evaluating foodstuff shipments to determine suitability for human consumption.
Training
RSS held the following training courses in which (33) people took part representing institutions from the private and public sectors:
- Training course in the field of chemical analysis using gas chromatography techniques,
- Training course in the field of chemical detergents,
- Training course in the field of chemical analysis using specroscopy techniques.
a. Research and Development and Studies
- Reducing the vibrations of the diesel engine No. (954) of trains used by Aqaba
Railway Corporation.
- Utilization of metalic scrap in Jordan for foundry purposes.
- Project on recycling and applications of polyethylene waste film in Egypt.
- Study on the validity of steel sheet tin-plated and lacquered can for the food canning
industry in Jordan.
b. Technical Consultations and Services
- (900) non-destructive quality control tests on welded joints in pipe lines, tanks, casting
and steel plates,
- (3) tests for detecting leakage in underground hot water pipes,
- (1500) mechanical tests to measure dimensions, weight and thickness of various materials,
- (4) calibrations of various devices and mechanical machines,
- (25) hydrostatic pressure tests for fire extinguishers,
- (2) technical consultations in the field of non-destructive testing technologies,
- supervising the works of exchanging 43 km of unacceptable water piping with
acceptable one at irbid project,
- (1) agreement for non-destructive inspection of drilling rigs for the Natural Resources Authority,
- (1430) tests on different plastics and rubber items such as pellets, films, bags, rings, and hoses,
- (10250) tests on imported and locally manufactured metallic materials such as
reinforced steel bars, steel mesh, steel pipes, radiators, castings, steel plates, steel screws,
steel wires, copper and steel valves, copper tap water, and windows,
- (538) tests to identify the quality, mechanical properties, chemical composition,
hardness, micro-structure and heat treatment of various imported and locally
manufactured metallic material,
- (3) technical consultations in the field of copper valves,
- (3) technical consultations in the field of aluminium window manufacturing,
- (3) agreements to monitor the quality of locally produced plastic pipes for potable
water transport,
- (1) technical consultation to investigate the causes of cracks in the neon lighting cover,
- (1) technical consultation to determine the causes of cracks in reinforced plastic pipes
used in the phosphoric acid concentration unit,
- (1) technical consultation to investigate the cause of deterioration of plastic sheating
of telephone cables,
c. Standards and Specifications
RSS participated in drafting the Jordanian standard for gas ovens used for domestic purposes.
RSS also participated in the following Jordanian Standards and Specification (JSS) committees:
- JSS of manufacturing central heating boilers,
- JSS of uplasticized polyvinyl chloride pipes and fittings for drainage and sewerage systems,
- JSS of polyethylene damp-proof courses for masonry,
- JSS of babies dummies,
- JSS of tooth brushes,
- JSS of cross-linked polyethylene pipes,
- JSS of polyethylene pipes for irrigation laterals,
- JSS of mechanical joint fitting for use with polyethelene pressure for irrigation purposes,
- JSS of water valves for nominal size (15-100) mm used for general purposes,
- JSS taps for water,
- JSS of steel bars for concrete reinforcement,
- JSS of tin-plated and lacquered tin-plated steel sheets,
- JSS of copper valves.
d. Training
RSS conducted the following training activities:
- Few undergraduate students from the aculty of mechanical engineering at the
University of Jordan were trained for two months at various mechanical engineering
laboratories,
- Few undergraduate students from the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Jordan
University for Science and Technology were trained for three months at various
mechanical engineering laboratories,
- Teaching physics laboratory at Pricess Sumaya University College for Technology,
- (1) engineer was trained within a programme to train newly graduate engineers,
- (1) Participation in four training courses at the University of Jordan within
the programme of communication with industry,
- Training of fourth year students of Amman University College of Applied Engineering
on methods of testing plastic products,
- Training students of the University of Jordan and Jordan University of Science and
Technology on all tests related to plastic laboratories, strength of materials,
and metallography,
- (5) students from the University of Jordan were trained and assisted in their graduate
studies, and (2) students were assisted in their undergraduate projects.
In addition, the following activities were carried out by RSS:
- Participation in a workshop on mechanical vibration,
- Participation in a seminar entitled "Engineering as A support for Development"/
University of Jordan.
- Participation in the arab International Conference for Packaging.
- Participation in the National Committee for the Packaging and Packing Sector/Jordan
- Participation in the environmental forum on the effects of plastic wastes/Jordan
Environmental Society and Friedrich nauman Foundation.
- Participation in the National Committee for the Establishment of National
Specifications for Vehicles Tyres/Ministry of finance.
- Participation in a Training course entitled "transfer of Science Research Results to Production and Service Centres "(4-13/11/1994-Bahrain).
a. Research and Development and Studies
1. Conducting technical studies to identify the needs of the following for
computerized information systems in addition to assessing their requirements
for computer equipment, pripherals, system software and application software:
- Ministry of Justice,
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
- National Aid Fund,
- The National Library,
- Ministry of Agriculture,
- Department of Press and Publication,
- Income Tax Department.
b. Technical Consultations and Services
RSS contiued to provide specialized technical services in the field of computer, and
their applications to Jordanian institutions in the private and public sectors.
Following are the major activities carried out this year:
- Providing technical consultation services which include preparing specifications
for computer hardware and their peripherals, and supervising their implementation
for the Housing and Urban Development Corporation and the National Aid Fund,
- developing software and integrated technical computerized information system for
the Civil Registration and Passports Department, the Aqaba ailway Corporation,
Queen Alia Fund, the Ministry of Health, and Development and Employment Fund,
- Supervising the implementation of computerized information systems at the computer
centres of the Chief Justice Department, Jordan Red Cresent Society, and the
Ministry of Health,
- Participating in committees for setting specifications and evaluating computer
equipment tenders for public sector institutions through the General Supplies
Department,
- issuing about four million telephone and telex bills for the Telecommunications
Corporation,
- Issuing monthly payroll statements for the military and civil pensioners, Ministry
of Social Development, Telecommunication Corporation, ministry of Transport, and
the Royal Scientific Society,
- Updating the international relations database and issuing reports of bilateral
relations between Jordan and other countries,
- Conducting maintenance services for all microcomputers at the Royal Scientific
Society and the Pricess Sumaya University College for Technology,
- Providing information research and retrieval services from international databanks
through direct linkage using DIALOG,
- Following up and updating the administrative and financial information systems
at the Royal Scientific Society.
c. Standards and Specifications
RSS participated in the following committees:
- Continuous Computer Paper Specifications commitee in cooperation with
the Standards and Specifications Directorate at the Ministry of Trade and
Industry.
- Specifications and measurements, supplies and evaluation committees formed by the
National Information Centre,
- The planning committee for computerizing the activities of institutions in
cooperation with the National Information Centre, the General Supplies Department and
the General Budget Department,
- Jordan National Committee for Education, Culture and Science.
d. Training
RSS held specialized training courses in the field of computers and their
applications to provide the workforce in Jordan and the Arab region with
distiguished expertise by launching its annual training plan which included
the following:
- Short-term training courses
(10) specialized short-term courses were held and attended by (80) participants
in the field of computers and their applications.
- Advanced training courses
(3) specialized long-term courses each lasting for (5) months in the field of
programming and system engineering with total of (5) paticipants held in cooperation
with the Japan international Cooperation Agency (JICA).
- Special programme in computers and their applications
(1) special third country training programme lasting for (5) months in the
field of computer technology and its applications attended by (11) participants
from Jordan and neighbouring Arab countries and held in cooperation with the
Japan International Cooperation Agency.
- Engineers rehabilitation Programme
(2) special rehabilitation programmes designed for newly-graduate engineers
attended by (20) engineers and held in cooperation with the Jordan Engineers Association.
- Academic training
- (28) students graduated from RSS Princess Sumaya College for informatics after completing
two years of study.
RSS also participated in the following activities:
- The Second Science and Technology Week organized by the Higher Council for
cience and Technology in Amman,
- Workshop on the National Information System at the National Information Centre
in cooperation with GTZ,
- The consultative meeting of the National Education, culture and Science Committees
organized by UNESCO in Amman,
- Meeting at Sussex University, England organized by IFIAS,
- Study tour of an advanced training centre in the field of computer technology
in singapore in coordination with the Japan International Cooperation
Agency (JICA),
- Seminar on "Recent Trends in Information Technology" at the Royal Scientific
Society in cooperation with the Japan International Coperation Agency (JICA),
a. Research and Development and Studies
- Designing of an electronic control unit to be used in solar heating
systems for actuating a circulative pump whenever a predetermined temperature
diference between heater and storage tanks is exceeded.
- Investigating the noise sources that plagued the audio equipment of the
languages laboratory of the Jordan University for Women.
- Developing a 12V battery charger incorporating protection against polarity
witching and voltage surges.
- Developing charge/discharge regulators for solar cell system capable of
andling high output currents (5-100 A) for 12V and 24V powersupplies.
- Developing a device for testing residual current circuit breakers.
b. Technical Consultations and Services
Within the scope of a maintenance contract with the ministry of health,
which covers (14000) pieces of medical equipment distributed in (18) hospitals
and (500) health centres throughout the Kingdom, the following technical services
were carried out:
- (10000) pieces of electromedical equipment in the Ministry of Health hospitals
and centres received periodic maintenance,
- (3500) pieces of electromedical equipment received maintenance at RSS
maintenance laboratories,
- (1700) pieces of electromedical equipment received maintenance at the
Ministry of Health hospitals and centres,
- (150) pieces of electromedical equipment were taken out of service due
to aging and high cost of maintenance,
- Pre-purchase evaluation of Al-Nadeem Hospital regarding cost of medical
and mechanical equipment,
- Participating in the acceptance committee of Al-Nadeem-Hospital,
- Participating in the design of three repair workshops in Ma'an Hospital,
Salt Hospital and Princess Basma Hospital in cooperation with the German Agency
for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). hese workshops shall be used for first line
maintenance in the future,
- Participating in preparing tenders and evaluating offers for medical equipment
to be purchased by the Ministry of Health,
- (4000) samples of imported or locally manufactured electrical materials were tested
to ensure their confirmity to Jordanian or international standards,
- Providing technical consultations for local electrical industries in the areas
of product quality improvement and participating in a number of technical committees
formed by the Department of General Supplies to technically study the offers for
supplying electrical materials and products,
- Maintenance and calibration of over (1000) test and measuring instruments for
parties in the private and public sectors,
- Testing, repair and calibration of electronic equipment for the various
technical centres of theRoyal Scientific Society,
- Participating in committees, set up by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, for
evaluation of the assets of industrial companies.

- Conducting an 8-month training course for (9) engineers on maintenance and operation
of medical equipment in cooperation with Prince Faisal Technical College,
- Conducting a 4-week training course for (9) Ministry of Health Technicians on
maintenance and operation of medical equipment,
- One RSS service engineer attended a training course on the maintenance
of laboratory equipment in Switzerland,
- Five RSS service engineers attended a training course on safety and
protection from nuclear radiation held at the Ministry of Energy and
Mineral Resources in cooperation with the international atomic Energy Agency,
- Two RSS engineers attended a training course on air conditioning and
control systems held at the University of Jordan,
- One RSS engineer participated in a training course held at the
University of Jordan on "quality Control Charts",
- Two RSS engineers participated in a training course held at the
University of Jordan on "quality Control In Industry",
- Three RSS engineers participated in a seminar on circuit breakers organized
by Westinghouse company in Amman.
