Integrated
Wastewater Management Policies & Technologies For Marginal Communities In
Jordan |
|
Project Area
|
The project is implemented within the
northeastern Badia of Jordan 150 km east of Amman. The total population of the area was estimated at about 28,480 in 2003, inhabitants live in 35 small-rural
communities. The majority of the people are involved in agriculture,
livestock production, civil service, commerce, the armed forces, mining and
prospecting industries. More than 85% of the population are accommodated
within a well-established basic infrastructure of roads, public water
network, electricity and telephones, but they lack public sewerage network services.
The climate of the area is arid. There are
seasonal temperature variations, with summer tending to be hot & dry and
winters cool & wet. Mean annual maximum temperatures reach 35 °C to 38 °C
in August. When cold, continental air penetrates into the area, the
temperature can drop as low as 1.6 °C. The rainfall ranges 50 mm to 250 mm
per annum. The table below shows
population at different communities in the project area. As for water
resources and facilities used for domestic water supply, there are six pumping
stations in the project area in addition to a desalination unit in Al-Safawi.
These stations pump water to two collection tanks in the study area (one in
Al-Safawi and the other in Dayr Al-Kahf). The area is provided with the
main infrastructure facilities such as roads, water supply network, schools
and health centers. Population at different communities in the project
area.
