Gray Water Quality and Quantity

In order to select the proper gray water treatment system that effectively treat the generated gray water , the quantity and quality of the gray water was determined by conducting 6- months monitoring program. Gray water from several household sources; Kitchen sink, showers and bath tubs, laundries, floor washing and moping water was quantified and qualified. The monitoring program covered 6 households in Abu Al Farth village in the Badai.

The monitoring program revealed that the gray water is generated at rate varies from 150 L/day to 200L/day depending on the family size, and the amount of the generated gray water represents about 30% of the total consumptive water. The quality of the gray water highly varies from source to source and is highly loaded with BOD5, COD, Suspended Solids, Fecal Coliform and E.coli.

The high contamination levels of the generated gray water highly depend on the current behavior of household occupants; washing the babies after removing the diapers on the sink resulted in high e.coli and fecal colifrom in the gray water.
