Establishment & Fields of Specialization
Princess Sumaya University College for Technology ( PSUCT ) was established in September 1991, in accordance with the Private Universities Law, and the authorization of the Higher Education Council. In 1994, PSUCT obtained the special accreditation for its program in computer science, a step necessary for all private universities for certificate recognition purposes.
PSUCT offers at present, courses leading to a B.Sc. degree in two fields:
PSUCT was established to meet Jordan’s technical educational and training needs envisaged in its socio-economic development plans. The college’s curricula are designed to benefit from the capabilities, accumulative expertise and technical services of the research centres of the Royal Scientific Society ( RSS ) . They are also practically oriented so that our graduates would directly engage in field-work without additional training.
PSUCT is highly selective regarding the quality and number of students it accepts for admission. The annual admission of students stands, now, at (125) and (80) students in Computer Science and Electronics Engineering respectively.
Campus
PSUCT is located at the RSS campus, which occupies an area of about 342000 square metres, in an attractive district north-west of Amman, about 11 km away from the city center.
PSUCT has a three-storey building, housing the offices of the college’s dean, the Computer Department and the Sciences and Humanities Department. In addition to many lecture halls. A new building of 3000 square metres houses the Electronics Engineering Department. The college has recently embarked on a new building project that would provide a separate complex for the college.
Facilities
The college is equipped with all the facilities needed by college students, such as playgrounds, an activities building, a cafeteria, a bookshop, public telephones, a post office, a clinic, and a mosque. There is also a library, which contains more than 40,000 reference books, and many specialized periodicals.
Laboratories
Lab work plays an important role in both the Computer Science and Electronics Engineering programs. Hence, the college has (30) modern laboratories distributed as follows:
B. Science Laboratories:
1. Physics Lab (1)
2. Physics Lab (2)
Education System and Assessment
PSUCT applies the credit hours system, and expects the student to regularly attend the lectures. The student will be eligible for a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science after satisfactorily completing (132) credit hours with an accumulative average of not less than 60%. The average student requires 4 years to complete the required courses. This period can be shorter depending on the student’s performance and ability for hard work.
In Electronics Engineering, a B.Sc. is granted on the satisfactory completion of (170) credit hours ( in addition to an 8-week training), and also with an accumulative average of not less than 60%. Thus, the student usually needs five years to complete the courses.
Academic Staff and Councils
The college academic staff currently consists of 44 members, 34 of which are Ph.D. holders, and 10 of which are M.Sc. holders. In accordance with the Private Universities Law, PSUCT has a board of trustees which sets the general polices, rules, and regulations of the college. The board is chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Sumaya Bint El-Hassan. There is also a College Council and a council for each department.
Cooperation Agreements
PSUCT has signed cooperation agreements in the fields of training and the exchange of educational expertise with a number of universities and educational institutions. A number of the Computer Science students will be sent annually for one academic year at the University of Illinois as of the academic year 1996/1997, and a number of Electronics Engineering students will be sent for training abroad within the framework of the programs of the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE), and the Arab Universities Union.
Tuition Fees & Credit Hours Per Term
The fee for each credit hour is 50 JD in Computer Science, and 60 JD in Electronics Engineering. The minimum number of credit hours per semester for Fall and Spring semesters is (12), and the maximum is (18). However, if the student’s accumulative average in the preceding term exceeds 80%, the upper limit can be raised subject to the approval of the college’s dean. The Summer term is optional, and the maximum load is (9) credit hours.
Admission
Applicants for admission should have the Jordanian GSE certificate – scientific stream, or equivalent certificates, with a minimum average of 60% for Computer Science, and 80% for Electronics Engineering. Since the number of applications by far exceeds the available seats each year, a selection of accepted students is made on a merit basis.
